THE ASSASSIN’S BULLET
THE ASSASSIN’S BULLET

In this contentious Presidential primary season, the Democrats’ Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have been recklessly tossing about charges and counter-charges like Molotov cocktails as their once-friendly rivalry has sunk into all-out warfare.
Obama correctly characterized President Ronald Reagan as a man of powerful vision who profoundly changed the direction of America. It was neither endorsement nor detraction, yet the Clinton camp, led first by surrogate pit-bull husband Bill and then the candidate herself, rushed to portray Mr. Obama as an admirer of Ronald Reagan, and therefore heinous traitor to all that Democrats hold ideal. Their reaction was silly nonsense, and most rational individuals read it as such.
Mrs. Clinton, attempting to drive a spike in the charismatic Obama and inject race into the contest, stated that Marin Luther King, Jr. would never gotten civil rights legislation passed had he not had Lyndon Johnston to push it through Congress. She was spot on with her assessment, and the Obama campaign reacted in outrage, claiming that Mrs. Clinton had disparaged the memory of Dr. King, playing right into the Clinton campaign’s strategy of portraying Barack Obama not as a visionary, but just another in a long line of shuck-and-jive black charlatans with pretensions toward the Presidential throne.
Mrs. Clinton was correct in her historical perspective about Dr. King and LBJ, but one name looms even larger in the fight for civil rights: Lee Harvey Oswald. Had not that misbegotten miscreant pumped a shot into JFK’s skull on that sunny day in Dallas, LBJ would not have become President, and gotten the sympathy vote in Congress to push through what was then assumed to be the Kennedy “legacy.” Don’t get me wrong, the legislation would have passed sooner or later, but perhaps not in its final form, and may not have been as sweeping as it became; nor would have Medicare, the Great Society, or the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, had not it been for the bloody, unexpected impact of the assassin’s bullet.
Such are the unpredictable crossroads of history, the “want of a nail,” so to speak. And allow me to make a bold prediction here, one I have been voicing for the past few months on my two radio shows: Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee for President because America has frankly grown weary of the Clintons. The philandering husband/shrill wife do-anything-and-say-anything-for-a-vote routine has grown thin, and I believe most Americans are looking not only for change, which is what Mr. Obama represents, but a change from Bill and Hillary.
There is an assassin’s bullet here, one that will cut down Mrs. Clinton’s maniacal aspirations to become the country’s first female President, and that bullet is Bill Clinton’s big mouth. The man can’t shut up, and has no shame when he fires up his slanderous tongue and lets loose with rapid-fire insults that are slowly turning people off. Many of the “in the know” political pundits opine that Mr. Clinton is a big help to his wife in his attack dog mode; I hold for the latter: as we see more and hear more of his traveling bible salesman’s pitch we remember Paula, and Monica, and Gennifer and the endless starburst shells of bimbo eruptions that occupied the bulk of his presidency and we begin to wish he would just go away, and take his wife with him. Maybe they could link up with Mr. Gore and save the planet from we mere mortals, if that pompous ass would have them. The fact is that the public mood is shifting and people are beginning to murmur, go away, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton; to anywhere but here.
As one who understands and deeply respects the weird vicissitudes of history, and the unexpected impact of the assassin’s bullet, I feel so sure about my assessment of the public mood that I may just phone in to Vegas with a wager. I’ll use my tax-rebate check, if it makes it to my bank account in time.

another great article Mr. Palmer.
My favorite line
"...we begin to wish he would just go away, and take his wife with him."

I am tired of both the Clinton and Bush dynasties. Change is needed and I wonder if we'll actually see any if Obama was elected. Unfortunately it will probably be Willard and Hillary as our choices. Beam me up Scotty.............

Once again, you've presented your readers with that rare combination of astute analysis and compelling prose. You're one heck of a writer, Lenny! They say that Plato was the last original man, but you explore some pretty obscure nuances and make them believable. Thanks for giving us something to think about.....Sandra P.S. I hope you're right about Obama....we sure as hell don't need a "great white mother" in the White House. I wish people would realize that she only elevates herself by keeping others "down" and needy. She'll climb her way to the top of the ladder by keeping them on the rung below her.

Very interesting perspective. Lenny should blog more often. I would enjoy his perspective on the potential November candidates (McCain vs Obama).

While a "Billary" White House would be a disaster, and I hope that Lenny is correct that people have had enough of those two and their minions like Carville and Begala, will someone please tell me what would be different about an Obama White House vs. a Clinton White House other than the color of the residents? What makes this man the one to change the face of politics as we know it in America? He speaks well, but speaks of nothing. He runs on "change", but what non-incumbent does not? He has as liberal, if not a more liberal voting record than does Hillary. Now, if liberalism is your cup of tea, by all means vote for the man in the primary and, should he become the democrat candidate, in the general election. However, if you are a voter who is looking for someone of more moderate policies, I'm not sure who you should vote for, but listen and keep your eyes and ears open for other, better options, because Obama isn't what you think he is. Despite the polished speaking style and bright smile he is an empty suit, long on rhetoric and short on new ideas and is all too willing and eager to take more of your hard earned money so as to "reinvest" it in the same kinds of programs that have been failing since Johnson introduced us to the Great Society. Better not to vote than to vote for either of these two if effecting real change that is right for America is what your goal is when voting in this election.

Please Lenny, please, do not take your correctly characterized inveterate vicissitudes of public sentiment with you to your mailbox. Lord knows; in a town floating away beneath the weight of Good Ole Boys and their toys, you might find your mailbox atop a slippery slope.
Who knows whether you will carry your firm beliefs to your feet when you step down on ice to find yourself on your back sliding down steps to the front street. Once at your street it is easy to see that, today, you will streak down streets many feet below water and ice.
Geez, what a ride it is bound to be. To the right and to the left you will slide. Finally, you will bust into a building where many are gathered. You will hoot until everyone else jumps to your hollers. Yet, little do know that this is not a church gathering. Instead, you are at the Brat Stop where your enthusiasm shoots as swiftly as an assassin's bullet to lift the Hillary campaign to the clouds.
Way to go, Lenny.
